Circle of 5ths
By Matt

This month I got Steve Mahoney of Circle of 5ths to answer a few questions.

LM: First off, who is in the band and what do they do?
Co5: Steve Mahoney: Vocal/ Guitar, Mike McNellis: Bass/Vocal, Thommy Jacobs: Drums/ Vocal

LM: Who writes the songs?
Co5: Sometimes the songs are skeletons built by one or two members. But every member has an input on all the songs so the answer is: All of us.

LM: Your band name is very interesting; where did it come from?
Co5: Circle Of 5ths is a musical term having to do with relationships between keys. Very useful to know for songwriters. In easy terms everything is related and that's an interesting concept.

LM: Does Circle Of 5ths have any CD's out?
Co5: We have 3 CD's out now total. The first one "Blurring The Lines" is no longer available, "Colorblind" and our new one "This Time" you can get.

LM: Where can fans pick up your CD's?
Co5: In the Northern California area you can get them through Tower or Dimple. You can also buy them directly from us off our website of course.

LM: Is there a band website where fans can get some more info about Circle Of 5ths?
Co5: Of course! You'll find us at http://www.circleof5ths.net, and linked through a variety of other music sites too.

LM: I saw that you guys have a pretty big show coming yup this month...
Co5: Every show is a "Big Show" to us; but we do have one coming up with King's X at The Boardwalk in Sacramento.

LM: Sounds great! I'm sure I'll be there, are you excited about the show?
Co5: Very much so. They are a very respected band worldwide and awesome musicians. This will be our first show in our hometown in quite some time. So yes... we are very excited.

LM: For those of us that have not been to a Circle of 5ths show, can you tell us what one is like?
Co5: We try to put as much energy out as possible. Jump around, interact with the crowd, and have a good time. That's what all the practicing is for, after all. And, we want our fans to have a good time when they spend their hard earned money to see us.

LM: What local bands do you guys share the stage with?
Co5: We play with anybody, anytime. If this is a chance to name drop some good locals... here goes. "Hey everybody... go to our "links" page and check out these bands! Darque Carnival: Reno's finest evil circus coming your way. Inruin: Toss in a blender on "shred" and VOILA! Inruin a la carte. Juggernaught: The Sacramento band, and their exploits. Myme: Dark and moody. Do you know where your children are? Phrenik: Sacramento band with all the right stuff. Stigma: Heavier than most metal bands without being metal. Tenfold: One of Sacto's best bands. Click and see for yourself.

LM: Who would you say you most sound like?
Co5: We sound exactly like Circle Of 5ths. Most of the reviews we've got say our sound is very unique in a good way; so that's cool. See for yourself live or at our site.

LM: What bands have had an effect on your sound?
Co5: *Whew*! As musicians, we're influenced by everything and nothing at the same time. We strive to create music that we personally enjoy first and foremost. Hopefully other people like it too and it catches on.

LM: This has been truly great, thanks for taking a few minutes to answer some questions, anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Co5: Go to a show, swing by our site, buy some STUFF!! Thanks for the great questions and reading our interview. Cheers.

Remember that "big show" is Feb. 25th at the Boardwalk. The line up is locals Circle of 5ths, Psychopathic records rockers, Zug Izland and Metal Blade legends, King's X.
