Interview

KJAG: What got this band together and started in this business?
CO5: We all came from other bands prior to this. We wanted to do something a little different than our other bands had done in the past.
KJAG: Who writes and produces all the material for the band?
CO5: All of us write material for the band. It is a very collaborative process. Sometimes one person may come up with the whole song or major portions of a song. Other times, it's just a melody idea, riff, or lyric that starts out a song. However they start at some point or another everyone has input and it becomes the bands collective song. Up until our recent EP release ("This Time") we had produced ourselves with guitarist Steve Mahoney taking the primary producer duties on. This time out (clever pun eh?) we chose to work with a producer that we were aquatinted with. Pat Olguin pushed us to get a better sound and performances, and that's what we wanted.
KJAG: Who is the bands musical influence?
CO5: There are so many for us individually the list would be miles long. We like a wide variety of music and artists. We tend to both allow and disallow those likes to influence our own style of writing.
KJAG: How did the band get together?
CO5: Pretty much like most bands. We were all playing in different groups. After a series of moves, we found ourselves playing together. At one point we decided that we wanted to take a different approach to our writing and business, and started the band known now as Circle Of 5ths.
KJAG: What is your musical background like?
CO5: All of the members of Circle Of 5ths have some sort of "formal" training. Mike McNellis (Bass) took lessons privately and also learned by watching others and participating in bands. Thommy Jacobs (Drums) took lessons privately from a few different instructors, and has become an instructor privately himself. Steve Mahoney (Vocal/Guitar) took private lessons for guitar, voice, and piano. Steve holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Audio/Video production, minor in Music Theory and Graphic Design.
KJAG: Any other members in your family that are musicians?
CO5: Only for Steve. His father was a singer in a swing jazz band. Steve's mother is a painter, and has run theater production companies and taught art in the local community.
KJAG: What is the TOP reason why you want to play music?
CO5: We love it. Seriously; making music for the band is our number one priority. Making this our one and only job is our number one goal.
KJAG: What has been your best show?
CO5: There have been so many great shows for us. Every show is great.
KJAG: Any good stories you want to tell us?
CO5: Why, what did you hear? Haha.
KJAG: Any embarrassing moments on stage?
CO5: See answer to last question.
KJAG: Where can people access your music on the web?
CO5: The Circle Of 5ths homepage is at http://www.circleof5ths.net
KJAG: The band played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the Mainstream?
CO5: Fortunatly, we've been lucky enough to play with a few known acts like Sevendust, Machine Head, Stuck Mojo, Hed(pe), Insolence, Quiet Riot, Skinlab, Vicious Rumors, and the legendary Living Colour to name a few. We have a show coming up with the legendary Kings X as well.
