From Powerslave.com - Show review The second band of the evening was the nearly year old Sacramento act Circle of 5ths, who appear on these reviewed pages for the first time as a four piece and since late 2000. Featuring guitarist Steve Mahoney, bassist bassist Mike McNellis, drummer Thommy Jacobs, and the increasingly talented vocalist Shyra, who's voice, set to Mahoney's guitar tone, completes The 5ths overall package. Circle of 5ths offers a heavier, blunt edged, occasional solo burst, heavy drum/bass line led sound with a high end, deeper Shyra melody. Bouncing from streamlined to all out metal riffing, with the juxtaposition of the heaviness and the accessibility butted right up against one another, creating a stronger tone. On stage, Circle of 5ths performed three of the four tracks from their currently available four track EP "Blurring the Lines" as well as a host of new tunes. Their set included "Words" which is one of their more popular tunes, newer tune "Parasite" which offers a heavy groove and offers a stepped beat at the midway point, brand new tune "New Vision", "Closure" which offers a slower wall of sound to open and works with a cool riff and is arguably one of their finest newer tune, disc tune "Consummate" which is an upbeat, high energy song, and "American Society" which opens with a heavy roll. Circle of 5ths, while already having the talent from the outset, are really coming together. The fact that Mahoney was the only guitarist in the sound mix was not even an issue, as even during his solos Jacobs and McNellis more than make up for the missing rhythm guitar. Really, the one ingredient that has steadily improved is Shyra. While always possessing the ability to perform in a traditional sense without even a hint of a problem, she now takes to the vocal duties with a stronger conviction than last year when this band first came together. Circle of 5ths is becoming a very good band in a short period of time for sure and one to check out. |
