Circle of 5ths "This Time"
While this disc basically represents a line-up that doesn't exist anymore (with a bunch of new members being introduced since this disc's inception), this is still the first crack at the recorded Circle of 5ths sound after their initial vocalist Shyra left the band back some time ago. With this effort (which features bassist Mike McNellis, drummer Tommy Jacobs, and guitarist / vocalist Steve Mahoney) Mahoney handled the vocal work and, actually, Mahoney does a pretty good job here, losing his "aggressive" vocal edge from years past, and showing off some melody in his voice.
This disc only has a scant three tracks on it, but it opens the door to what this band is after down the road and paints the picture for what they are about to embark on with the new line-up. This disc holds credibility, mostly due to Mahoney's song creation ability. The guitars work at some heavier riffs in isolated places, with a definite nod to the driving rhythm feel more than anything overly aggressive in nature (although the band does pump at some harder chops here and there).
The first track, "This Time", wins this disc over for sure, working with a slightly modified heavy edge approach but walking into this huge sounding chorus line that is backed by a high flying guitar line.
While Mahoney has once again stepped away from the vocal lead again, this disc will remain as the interlude between the "Shyra years" and the "new" rebirth of Circle of 5ths.
Mahoney and company created some pretty killer music here and something says more of this is to come.
